An exceptional tasting of an exceptional bottle!

When you get the opportunity to try The Macallan Exceptional Single Cask 2017/ESB-5223-10... you don't say no.. and I was not disappointed, let me tell you that. After chatting with the team at the Tunes Bar, which is part of the Conservatorium hotel, I got the opportunity to try out this unique bottle.

At first I was a bit intimidated by the prospect of trying out such a special drink but like all things new in my life, I smile and go for it!

I - On the nose

This is quite something. Like you're sniffing a cup of coffee with a shot of caramel. There is the slightest hint of citrus in there and a tiny bit of spice.

II - The palate

Ok, what you need to know about this whisky is that it is potent. At 65,9%, I worried the alcohol would overpower the flavor of the whisky... it is a bit overwhelming at first, filling your mouth with a lot of heat. But as this simmers down you start tasting more of the whisky. Again you can taste those hints of caramel and coffee.

At 65,9%, I worried the alcohol would overpower the flavor of the whisky.

III - The finish

This whisky sticks around. If not in taste, at least the warmth of the drink does. There is a slight bitter note at the end but I'm still a fan.

When to drink it?

Ladies and gents, this is not a cheap bottle. Prices range between € 2500 and € 6800 per bottle. If you have that kind of cash in your pocket, I would still keep safely locked away in my cabinet and only open it up for special occassions.. But if you're going to indulge (but not in the mood to spend that much on a bottle), I would suggest you head over to Tunes Bar in Amsterdam, have yourself a chinwag with Bryan and enjoy a glass with a great view.
