Expat Sazerac in the City

An Instagram post, a unique story, a classic cocktail with a twist.

At the beautiful Pulitzer's Bar one sunny Sunday afternoon.

What started with a simple Instagram like on the Pulitzer's Bar Instagram page became the perfect recipe for another whisky cocktail tasting. Inspired by the legendary life of Pulitzer prize winner Ernest Hemingway, the Pulitzer's Bar created a cocktail menu that takes you on a journey through Italy, Paris and Cuba where the famed author wrote his memorable works.

The Expat Sazerac is a fascinating, European, twist on a traditional cocktail where North American ingredients have been replaced with European equivalents. And in the words of the hotel:

Inspired by The Lost Generation of US-expatriate writers, living in Paris during the 1920s.

So what's in a classic Sazerac? Usually a combination of Cognac or Rye Whiskey, Absinthe, Peychaud's Bitters, and Sugar.

The Expat Sazerac contains Talisker Storm, Yaguara Cachaca, salted Caramel syrup, Peychauds, salted Absinth and Pistachio.

The taste?

Let's be honest - this is not your average Sazerac we're dealing with here. The rye whisky, which gives it its distinct flavor has been replaced with a Scottish favorite, the Talisker Storm. This gives this cocktail an incredible smoky boost, which you can sniff the moment you bring the glass to your lips.

The salted caramel and salted Absinth add to the sensation of feeling like you are about to take a plunge in the ocean. And as a finish - the slice of orange peel gives the entire experience just the right kind of a kick.

Did I like it?

Yes, more than I had expected actually. What the Pulitzer's Bar did is take a classic recipe and poured that into a modern jacket. With the use of the Talisker Storm, you really feel like you are about to embark on that journey to the Isle of Skye, where there is a warm welcome waiting for you at home.

And so I took out my book, enjoyed the blues playing in the background, sipped this delicious drink and all the while occasionally peeking outside over the Amsterdam canals. Dreaming of drams on the Isle of Skye.
